About the Author
Yudhijit Bhattacharjee is an award-winning writer whose features and essays on espionage, cybercrime, science and medicine have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Wired and other U.S. magazines. Yudhijit spent 11 years as a staff writer at the weekly journal Science, writing about neuroscience, astronomy and a variety of other topics in research and science policy. His work has been anthologized in the Best American Science and Nature Writing series. Yudhijit has an undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and a master's in journalism from The Ohio State University. He lives in a suburb of Washington, D.C., with his wife, his two children and a big red dog.

Readers who love legal or police procedurals are sure to enjoy Yudhijit Bhattacharjee’s “The Spy Who Couldn’t Spell”. Proving the adage “truth is stranger than fiction”, Bhattacharjee writes of the search for and capture of Brian Patrick Regan; that search began following receipt of a package, by the FBI New York, containing coded letters. What follows becomes a methodical exercise in logic and deduction as Steven Carr, the FBI agent assigned to this case, works tirelessly to decipher the spy’s codes and bring him to justice.
Yudhijit Bhattacharjee draws vivid portraits of the two primary individuals involved in this espionage documentary. Regan, the retired Air Force Master Sergeant and employee of the National Reconnaissance Office who attempted to betray the United States, may have been the ideal spy. One of eight children, his learning disabilities and size made him appear doltish and inept. “…it can induce a permanent sense of being an outsider …” However, he possessed a keen spatial intelligence and a cunning mind. “…the perfect insider threat, underestimated and ignored, left to operate stealthily …” Disaffected and feeling “… increasingly frustrated and powerless …” along with Regan’s financial situation were factors motivating the betrayal. Steven Carr, “…a devout Catholic …” and “…a firm believer …that God was the master of his destiny …” was driven by his desire to serve others. He felt his work in the FBI was his way of serving both God and his country.
While chronicling the spy hunt thoroughly, Yudhijit Bhattacharjee rarely allows the narrative to drag. However, he does provide several detailed discussions about the coding Regan employed. Regardless of how interesting these discussions are, they can become tedious. The human-interest aspect and the investigation-related portions of the book are sufficiently compelling so that the reader wants to continue exploring to discover what the next development may be.
“The Spy Who Couldn’t Spell” is not a book every reader will enjoy, but one that will grab readers having an interest in procedural narratives. Yudhijit Bhattacharjee has presented a detailed, methodical investigation in an interesting manner without neglecting the human characters involved in the story.

Okay, first an embarrassing confession: When I first read of this I thought it was a spoof
I had never HEARD of the case of Brian Regan (but I DID know of a very good comedian with that name)
I was not familiar with the author (he writes for publications I, to my loss I'm sure, don't read) and, let's be frank, his name COULD be an anagram!
So, because I would LOVE it, if it were a spoof, I ordered it
Imagine my chagrin when I discovered that the book is, indeed, about a REAL case and, one of the BEST I've ever read!
It's a thriller; It IS funny as hell at times, and tense when it needs be, and fascinating from staret to finish.
Also, not for nothing, it's a marvelous primer in ciphers and codes; a great character stuy (or two or three, such)
And a delightful reading experience for any fan of ANY of the above
I cannot urge you strongly enough to pick this one up
And catch the OTHER Brian Regan's act the next time he's in your area or on TV

Pretty Amazing Story About An American Traitor That You Probably Never Heard About

This was a very intriguing read for me because I enjoy spy thrillers, both fiction and non-fiction. This is a true story and the writer recounts it by compiling information from interviews that he conducted with dozens of employees at the FBI, NRO, NSA, CIA, and other government agencies.
He was also able to talk to family and childhood friends of the spy to paint a very detailed picture of his upbringing and adolescent years.
The writer let's us know who the culprit is by the end of the second chapter. He then delves into the spy's background and his motivation for doing what he did. The entire second half of the book is dedicated to how the FBI deciphered the spy's codes. It is very analytical and may be confusing for many readers because it is quite complicated.
It is a relatively short read at about 280 pages. There is not a lot of high suspense action because that is not how it happened. The book is more of a tribute to the perseverance of the agents who surveilled this criminal with such patience and dedication.
I think if you like Tom Clancy novels without all the fluff, you should enjoy this book. It is a very unique and unusual documentary of a modern traitor. It also should scare the heck out of you as to how easy it was for this guy to steal some of the country's most guarded secrets!
