About the Author

Sue Black is a professor of anatomy and forensic anthropology and director of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee. She is a founder and director of the Centre for International Forensic Assistance (CIFA), founder and past president of the British Association for Human Identification, and advisor to the Home Office on issues pertaining to disaster victim identification (DVI). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, and an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001 for her services to forensic anthropology in Kosovo, the Lucy Mair medal for humanitarian services in anthropology, and a police commendation in 2008 for DVI training.

Eilidh Ferguson was nominated to be coeditor for this text by her student peers. She graduated with a first-class honours bachelor of science degree in forensic anthropology from the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee. Eilidh served as class representative during her period of study at the university, and this is her first venture into publications.

On the night of August 5, 1927, someone shot and killed Coleman Osborn, a store owner in
Chatsworth, Georgia, in his place of business. Police and neighbors found only circumstantial
traces of the murderer: tire tracks, boot prints, shell casings, and five dollars in cash near
Osborn’s body. That day, three individuals—James Hugh Moss, a black family man locally
renowned for his baseball skills; Clifford Thompson, Moss’s white friend who grew up in the
Smoky Mountains; and Eula Mae Thompson, Clifford’s wife and a woman with a troubling history
of failed marriages and minor run-ins with the law—left Etowah, Tennessee, unknowingly
on a collision course with Deep South justice.

In chilling detail, Robert N. Smith examines the circumstantial evidence and deeply flawed
judicial process that led to death sentences for Moss and the Thompsons. Moving hastily in the
wake of the crime, investigators determined from the outset that the Tennessee trio, well known
as bootleggers, were the culprits. Moss and Clifford Thompson were tried and convicted within a
month of the murder. Eula Mae was tried separately from the other two defendants in February
1928, and her sentence brought her notoriety and celebrity status. On the night of her husband’s
execution, she recanted her original story and would change it repeatedly in the following years.
As reporters from Atlanta and across Georgia descended on Murray County to cover the trials
and convictions, the public perception of Eula Mae changed from that of cold-blooded murderer
to victim—one worthy of certain benefits that suited her status as a white woman. Eula Mae
Thompson’s death sentence was commuted in 1928, thanks in part to numerous press interviews
and staged photos. She was released in 1936 but would not stay out of trouble for long.

An Evil Day in Georgia exposes the historic deficiencies in death penalty implementation
and questions, through its case study of the Osborn murder, whether justice can ever be truly
unbiased when capital punishment is inextricably linked to personal and political ambition and
to social and cultural values.

This is absolutely a fantastic book. Chapter 1 goes deep into the history of Murray County, GA and gives a wonderful description of the physical, political, and cultural scene. Understanding the background of the county made the rest of the story so much more intense. I loved the entire book and the detailed story. This is a must read!

Justice denied.

It wasn't an easy fast read, but it was fascinating to me, personally as one of the people in the book, Eula was related to me. It is a very detailed book, full of a lot of information. Very sad how our justice system wasn't a fair justice system at all during their lifetime.

A Fast Read

A fast read. A good first book for Greg Scott. It gave me a much better understanding on the 'Bullseye" breach (counting myself as one of its millions of victims). There are parts of the book where you can definitely tell it was written by a "rookie" author (no disrespect intended), but overall, Mr. Scott keeps the story moving and interesting. Being in the IT / Information Security field myself, I recognized many of the issues we face in the industry, especially the attitudes from IT and business executives that look at security as a burden and not an absolute necessity. I look forward to Mr. Scott's future work.

I loved this book and you will too!

Bullseye Breach is a fictionalization of the recent security lapses at major retailers and a plan for how to fight back against such breaches. The IT side of this book is right on. For starters, the method used by the bad guys to hack into the retailer highlights the role of social engineering. Access to Bullseye's intranet is through a simple password gleaned from a third-party vendor via "phishing" --- the technique hackers use to get someone to click on a link in an email and/or download something. The hackers dress up the link so the person being targeted ignores any security warnings from the browser or operating system. A similar technique is also used in the book to gain administrator passwords for the retailer's intranet. The message is clear and can't be stressed enough: know your sources. Don't click on or download from anyone you're not 110% sure of. And, don't ignore security warnings from your antivirus program or operating system.

Beyond a blueprint for how the recent credit-card scams might have happened and how to prevent or deal with the hacking, Bullseye Breach is a great read. There are many characters, but each is idiosyncratic enough to be memorable in their own right. The bad guys are plausible and unfortunate. The main hero is adorable, with his loud sweater and inappropriate footwear. (You can just see this nerdy man in action.) Scott's prose is fluid and easy to read, gently propelling the reader onward through the twists and turns of the breach and resolution. I loved this book, and you will too!

I am just over 1/2 way through the ebook (55% - just (re-)read the sample "Regina").
Sad to say, some of the characters came out a little 'caricatured' and 'sterotypical' - specifically the "bad russian mobster" and his 'favourite' nephew. While I found myself visualising these people, they were more like a '1D' representation.
I do appreciate the tech-side (being more than a little paranoid and in ITSec myself), but some of the characterisations could have done with some some more polish.
I will continue reading until I finish (I bought it this morning, should be done sometime tomorrow).
It is a page-swiper (it is an ebook :)
I will admit, parts of it remind me of Clifford Stoll's classic "The Cuckoo's Egg" - which is a "good thing" :)

Maria Miceli, a social psychologist with a background in philosophy, is a senior researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council (ISTC-CNR) in Rome, where she is a member of the Goal-Oriented Agents Lab. Her research activity focuses on the cognitive aspects of social mechanisms and processes and their interplay with motivational and emotional components, and on modelling architectures of intelligent autonomous agents endowed with social capabilities. Topics of interest include: kinds and processes of evaluation; values; self-esteem and defense strategies; loneliness; dependence, help-giving and help-seeking; loss of motivation; helplessness and crying; guilt and guilt-inducement strategies; anticipation and related emotions; social comparison and related emotions; persuasion strategies, with special reference to emotional strategies; comfort as a special form of social support; forgiveness.

Cristiano Castelfranchi is professor of economical psychology at the LUISS University in Rome (2007-present), and full professor of social psychology at the Uninettuno international telematic university (2008-present). He has been full professor of general psychology at the University of Siena (2001-2011), and director of the ISTC-CNR in Rome (2002-2011), where he is presently coordinator of the Goal-Oriented Agents Lab. A cognitive scientist with a background in linguistics and psychology, he is also active in the multi-agent systems and social simulation communities. I absolutely love this book. It is a guide that you don't have to read from beginning to end. As I learn more and more from Acharya Shree, I go back to this book, I read again, and each time my understanding is deeper. The Book is Good, But the Movie is Better

The Tall Stranger by Louis L'Amour is well worth reading, but the movie starring Joel McCrea is better. As I have previously stated in other reviews of L'Amour's work, his early novels are his best, with one or two exceptions. In the beginning he was only concerned about telling us a good story, but in later years began to philosophize until it reached a point where it interferred with his story telling ability. I know most authors have something they want to say in their work which they want us to understand and agree with, but they can get carried away, and when there is no editorial advice provided to check this urge it can run amok. But there is none of that in this book; it is story telling at its best.
