A Remedy for What Ails Us Today

This book wasn't quite what I expected, but I learned a lot from it. Life can be like that - and I think it is fair to say that this is one theme in the book. Funny how that happened.

Oddly enough, as I write this, my wife is watching the New York Housewives on TV, and two of them are running a Spartan Race. Quite a coincidence, given that these races are the backdrop for the book. One of the women did not enjoy the experience. Her husband tried to explain the point of what they did, but she didn't get it.

I had never heard of Spartan races before reading this book. Think a race through an obstacle course from hell, and you'll get the picture. Big, unexpected challenges.

The point of these races seems to be to push the runners hard and teach them something about life in the process - in a word, how to overcome. Or maybe, it's better to say that they teach people something about how life really is/should be, as opposed to the "fake" one that today's society has created/imposed upon us (or most of us). Doing the seeming impossible is possible if one applies the Spartan "way".

The book is critical of how children are coddled today, even to the point of being given prizes for showing up to a competition, whether they win of lose. I'm in my 50's, and this is certainly not how it was when I was a kid - what happened? Is there any wonder why kids grow up so "entitled" now? A rude awakening is the result. Bad all around.

There is also criticism of many aspects of modern life. Too much electronics, too much bad food, not enough exercise, etc. No argument here. I made some changes in my life regarding all this recently and am happy with the results.

As an aside, I have to say that the 3-D effect on the cover was very cool. Not sure how they did it.

Overall, I liked the book very much. It made many great points. The writing was very good and kept me interested. Better than many books I've read lately.

I didn't like that the book seemed a bit too much about the Spartan Races/the physical and not enough about what to do with the lessons learned. It might have been a bit more balanced if the book went into other difficult challenges that might teach the same lessons, and that spiritual challenges might get you there as well. Did I miss any of this in the book? Maybe it was there, but didn't seem to be very directly there if so. To me, the real point of pushing yourself so hard physically with a Spartan Race is to have a transforming "spiritual" experience or put yourself on the road to having one - in fairness, the book did seem to go there indirectly, but I didn't see it go there directly, which I think it should have.

In any case, I think this book provides a path for "shock therapy" for what ails us as a society today. Might not work for everyone without a lot of preparation - you do have to be pretty tough to take this path - but I think it would get results.

Would I try it? Hmm... I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

Mainly a book to sell the authors spartan events

I'm truly disappointed in this book. I had it on pre-order and was under the impression that Joe De Sena, who is admittedly an absolute bad ass, would share his wisdom and secrets to success. Instead, 80% of the book is describing the Spartan Races he runs and testimonials/stories from people who have done one of his races. The actual useful content is minimal and to suggest its 20% useful content is too generous.

Other than the book being an obvious marketing ploy to sell his events, the editing is shocking. There is no flow to the book nor substance.

If the title is something that interests you I would suggest just going on his Spartan events and saving the time and financial investment on this book. I'm sure that people who've ran his races would enjoy this book more but personally, I'm thoroughly disappointed.

Surprisingly good for a book that is essentially an extended advertisement for extreme race events run by the author

Spartan races are those events made famous with titles such as "This race might kill you" and "This race likely will kill you". Their blanket waivers, signed by all race participants, go to graphic lengths to point out the many creative ways in which you may be permanently injured - or die. From the mind that brought young (mostly) men to this sport comes a book that seems partly a justification for the existence of these races, partly an advertisement and finally a mantra for a more adventurous way to live our lives.

Despite the constant sense of urgency, the blatant self-aggrandizement and behavior attributed to the author, by his own hand, that borders in the masochistic, I found this book to be enjoyable. The races are described in gory detail and, despite the reason centers in my brain threatening to quit in protest, I found myself actually considering one of the easier races offered by Joe De Sena.

This book will be appreciated by the usual cast of characters - Cross Fit junkies, triathloners looking for something edgier, fraternity brothers, college athletes and the more fit among desk jockeys. It gives a fairly coherent and complete explanation of why some people choose this lifestyle, how it adds to their lives, and the price they sometimes pay for their devotion. Moreover Mr. De Sena draws connections between Spartan athletes behavior on and off the battlefield. Some may find these stretched but it's not unreasonable to conclude grit is something that applies to many of life's arenas.

About the Author

Pierre Capretz is the creator of French in Action and a pioneer in video-based foreign-language instruction. He taught French at Yale University from 1956 to 2003 and was director of the Yale Language Laboratory from 1963 to 2000. Barry Lydgate is professor of French at Wellesley College.

Best French learning book!

Bonjour! This is a very good book and very useful when accompanied by its workbook and dvds.

I took French beginner's course at UC Berkeley Extension and they recommended this book. I was very happy with their recommendation.
There are tons of french teaching coursed and books out there in the market. Choosing the right book with a combination material is the right way to start. Do not get confused with so many authors and editions. Just stick to one and buy the accompanying dvds, workbook and voila! you are all set.

Self-learning is a bit difficult, I suggest joining a good institute and follow their process to learn. French is a difficult language to learn and to hone the skills esp. in speaking. The pronunciation is really what that matters when learning French. So go for it and Bonne chance!

Now THIS is a French home study worth every cent! With DVDs, a coordinating text and a workbook, learning just happens. The DVD content was developed by knowledgeable educators. Theres instructional classroom time. An entertaining video of French people going through daily life to reinforce what was taught in class. Other French media is also included to add cultural interest. I've tried several other means of learning the language. This one is superb!

Chapter I

THE SOURCES

No work of the Presocratics has come down in its entirety. We possess fragments preserved by later authors, and testimony. The major sources are as follows:

A. Philosophers

(i) Plato gives useful information about his predecessors. Since he himself was not a historian of philosophy, his remarks must be treated with caution.

(ii) Aristotle surveyed his predecessors' testimony on the philosophical problems with which he himself was concerned. The Presocratics are thus made parties to his argument, not left to speak for themselves, and this often introduces a cast into his interpretation. Nevertheless, he was not without a sense of history, and his work is, and will remain a major source of knowledge.

(iii) The Stoics' method of interpretation was syncretistic: they undertook to show that their predecessors agreed with Stoic doctrine, and with each other.

(iv) Sceptics, such as Sextus Empiricus, were concerned to exhibit the contradictions of earlier philosophy, but preserved valuable fragments.

(v) The Neo-Platonists, especially Proclus, Alexander, and Simplicius, commented on Plato and Aristotle; with the library of the Academy at their disposal, they too preserved many fragments.

B. The Doxographical Tradition

Theophrastus, Aristotle's successor in the Lyceum, continued the Peripatetic interest in history. As part of the encyclopedia of knowledge projected by the school, Theophrastus wrote On the Opinions of the Physical Philosophers, parts of which have come down to us. He consulted the original texts of the Presocratics, but his historical judgment was much influenced by Aristotle.

Theophrastus' work became the standard authority in the ancient world. The doxographers are those who derive their material, directly or indirectly, from the Opinions (doxai). The main sources in the doxographical tradition are Diogenes Laertius (probably third century A.D.), Plutarch (first-second century A.D.), and John Stobeaus (fifth century A.D.).

Allen's Greek Philosophy

For a teacher willing to present his or her own analysis of the period, but looking for an inexpensive source of well-translated key texts from the pre-Socratics to Aristotle, this collection is unbeatable. At 450 pages it contains more than enough core reading for a one-term course. Moreover, it includes the 'unmoved mover' argument from the 'Phaedrus', which its competitors, even at twice the length and thrice the price do not.

quality book of original texts

This book does not deal with analysis, it is a book of the texts of the ancients. The textual translations are accurate, and the sources Allen provides for further research are sound. It is an inexpensive quality way to learn the extant writings of the Ancients. If you are looking for analysis or explanation, though -- look elsewhere.

A very good concise guide on Bosnian culture, customs, and everyday life

I've lived the first half of my life in Bosnia and the second half in the U.S. and I find this small book to be a very good, concise guide to Bosnian culture, customs, and everyday life. If you live outside of Bosnia and are planning a trip there, or want to understand Bosnian people better, get this book. There are not many pictures and photographs in the book. More photos with captions could have enhanced the content of the book better.

In-depth cultural summary

My sister is heading off to Bosnia for a year abroad and I wanted to surprise her with a book to read on culture and customs while she's preparing. However, there were no books to be found solely on Bosnia except for this one! It has greatly exceeded my expectations in the material it has to share, if this is the only good travel book out there, it is definitely a sufficient representation of all the wonders Bosnia has in store for her!

In doing so, he illuminates the Soviets' remarkable ability to recruit and retain soldiers, revealing why so many were willing to fight in the service of a repressive regime—and how that service was crucial to the army's military effectiveness. He examines the various forms of voluntarism and motivations to serve-including the influences of patriotism and Soviet ideology-and shows that many fought simply out of loyalty to the idea of historic Russia and hatred for the invading Germans. He also considers the role of political officers within the ranks, the importance of commanders who could inspire their troops, the bonds of allegiance forged within small units, and persistent fears of Stalin's secret police.

Brimming with fresh insights, Reese's study shows how the Red Army's effectiveness in the Great Patriotic War was foreshadowed by its performance in the Winter War against Finland and offers the first direct comparison between the two, delving into specific issues such as casualties, tactics, leadership, morale, and surrender. Reese also presents a new analysis of Soviet troops captured during the early war years and how those captures tapped into Stalin's paranoia over his troops' loyalties. He provides a distinctive look at the motivations and experiences of Soviet women soldiers and their impact on the Red Army's ability to wage war.

Ultimately, Reese puts a human face on the often anonymous Soviet soldiers to show that their patriotism was real, even if not a direct endorsement of the Stalinist system, and had much to do with the Red Army's ability to defeat the most powerful army the world had ever seen.

The best overall source on Red Army motivation

Roger Reese's work is always interesting, accessible, and important. This book contributes a lot to our understanding of the Red Army through the extensive use of recently-published interviews and memoirs, and newly-available archival materials. (The Preface provides an excellent evaluation of sources.) The discussion of primary group theory is particularly valuable, as this subject hasn't received nearly enough attention in Russian military history compared to works on Germany's forces. Reese makes a key contribution in his analysis of the Red Army's catastrophic losses of the first year, which he argues was due to the unique military situation (force ratios, training and doctrine, supply, fatigue) rather than to lack of motivation or will. He also persuasively shows that politics played a minimal role as either as a positive or negative troop motivator. Read firsthand accounts, by all means (as another reviewer has suggested) -- then read this book to place the soldiers' experience of war in a meaningful context.

Well-organized book, with pretty decent analysis on a tough topic to address.

This book provides a serious effort to study why the Soviet Army fought in World War Two, with an obvious focus on why the troops fought so hard for a regime that treated its military personnel so callously. Roger Reese goes a long way toward answering this critical question using solid analytic tools and available sources, and I applaud his effort. However, after reading the book one is still left with questions about how Moscow was able to force so many of its troops to take part in so many futile, even suicidal massed infantry attacks against strong defenses. I think that all of us who have read a lot about the war on the Eastern Front are left wondering about this question and I'm guessing that Reese cannot find more first-hand accounts of particiapnts in such actions to better address the question. Nonetheless, Reese's book is well-organized and he does a great job of reiterating his key judgments. A second, minor criticism is that I would have liked more photographs and other graphics.
