Three components contribute to a theme sustained throughout the Coburn/Herdlick Graphs and Models series: that of laying a firm foundation, building a solid framework, and providing strong connections. In the Graphs and Models texts, the authors combine their depth of experience with the conversational style and the wealth of applications that the Coburn/Herdlick texts have become known for. By combining a graphical approach to problem solving with algebraic methods, students learn how to relate their mathematical knowledge to the outside world. The authors use technology to solve the more true to life equations, to engage more applications, and to explore the more substantial questions involving graphical behavior. Benefiting from the feedback of hundreds of instructors and students across the country, Precalculus: Graphs & Models emphasizes connections in order to improve the level of student engagement in mathematics and increase their chances of success in precalculus and calculus.

The launch of the Coburn/Herdlick Graphs and Models series provides a significant leap forward in terms of online course management with McGraw-Hill’s new homework platform, Connect Math Hosted by ALEKS Corp. Math instructors served as digital contributors to choose the problems that will be available, authoring each algorithm and providing stepped out solutions that go into great detail and are focused on areas where students commonly make mistakes. From there, the ALEKS Corporation reviewed each algorithm to ensure accuracy. A unifying theme throughout the entire process was the involvement of the authors. Through each step, they provided feedback and guidance to the digital contributors to ensure that the content being developed digitally closely matched the textbook. The result is an online homework platform that provides superior content and feedback, allowing students to effectively learn the material being taught.

Skips logical steps
By Excelcius
I'm writing this review as an adjunct professor who got stuck teaching Precalculus (with little formal training). My knowledge of Precalculus is quite dated, as a result, I've been forced to relearn this material in order to teach it. I think that this background puts me in a great place to review a math text. I can decipher the material with some work each lesson. That's fine, as it usually helps me understand it better. However, this book's examples are not always step by step. They often skip a logical step and leave the reader to figure out what it is that they did. Perhaps that's how some people like their textbooks, or people with a Math degree may not even notice. However, as a person who must use the book and only the book to figure out the math, it can be quite painful to try and make the connections that the authors left out.

I will say that the book seems to be comprehensive and covers most of the information I need. I can not however, recommend this book to a student who is trying to learn the information without the aid of a professor who can bridge for them, the gaps in logic.

Awesome Ecclectic Selections
By Kevin Curtis
I have ordered the Best American Short Stories and the Best American Mystery Stories for years. This compilation was an Amazon suggestion based on those purchases and it's a winner. Unless you subscribe to dozens of magazines and cull them for the best writing, you'll never find an easier way to enjoy concise, well written pieces by several outstanding journalists in one place.

uneven, occasionally wonderful
By Generic Personage
This poorly designed volume reprints wonderful work by Luke Dittrich on the Joplin tornado, Lawrence Wright on a longtime adherent's difficult break with Scientology, and excellent offerings from Wesley Yang, Chris Hitchens, and some others. Some of the "winners" left me cold, but taste varies, I suppose. The book wastes 30-some pages listing people associated with the project. (Important to them, not important to me) It's a good companion for a flight across the country.

Good read
By jmk
I wasn't in love with every selection, but overall this was a very enjoyable read. I particularly liked "The Apostate," "Arms and the Dudes," the story about Anonymous, and "The Hox River Window." However, even the pieces that I didn't love were worth reading. I would recommend this for anyone that enjoys reading nonfiction writing.

The Plan of Salvation, by Benjamin B. Warfield

THE SUBJECT to which our attention is to be directed in this series of lectures is ordinarily spoken of as "The Plan of Salvation." Its more technical designation is, "The Order of Decrees." And this technical designation has the advantage over the more popular one, of more accurately defining the scope of the subject matter. This is not commonly confined to the process of salvation itself but is generally made to include the entire course of the divine dealing with man which ends in his salvation. Creation is not uncommonly comprehended in it, and of course the fall, and the condition of man brought about by the fall. This portion of the subject matter may, however, certainly with some propriety, be looked upon as rather of the nature of a presupposition, than as a substantive part of the subject matter itself; and no great harm will be done if we abide by the more popular designation. Its greater concreteness gives it an advantage which should not be accounted small; and above all it has the merit of throwing into emphasis the main matter, salvation. The series of the divine activities which are brought into consideration are in any event supposed to circle around as their center, and to have as their proximate goal, the salvation of sinful man. When the implications of this are fairly considered it may not seem to require much argument to justify the designation of the whole by the term, "The Plan of Salvation."

"There are fundamentally only two doctrines of salvation: that salvation is from God, and that salvation is from ourselves." This is pretty much Warfield's passion in this book. It is written by an intellectual zealot for the Christian faith and the Reformed Tradition. Warfield's erudition may mean that his modern readers get stretched a bit, but if you want to understand how the various denominational distinctive views on salvation are fundamentally to be understood, this book is where to start.

The book is based on a series of lectures, as with Kuyper's Stone Lectures on Calvinism, and are therefore oriented toward an audience inclined to systematic study. The language on the whole is accessible and not overly technical. The lecture format gives the material a "bite-sized" nature which allows for reading in segments rather than having to carry a theme through the whole. All in all, this book will become indispensable to anyone who cares about the doctrines of salvation and needs grounding for their own understanding or for presenting it to others.

Warfield identifies the vital questions linked with God's plan of salvation
By Mike Pettengill
The Plan of Salvation is a series of five lectures originally delivered by B.B. Warfield. The topics include: Differing Conceptions, Autosoterism, Sacredotalism, Universalism, and Calvinism.

If we believe in a God, we believe in the control by this God over the world he has created. We must then believe in the plan outlining all that God does, and also in His plan of salvation. What then is God's plan for salvation?

These lectures by Warfield present a logical and incisive examination of God's plan of salvation from sin. They provide a valuable tool to a systematic review of the biblical truths to God's plan of salvation.

Warfield identifies the vital questions linked with God's plan of salvation. He provides a detailed analysis of the most dangerous answers that men have created to those questions. He outlines the detriment to men's souls and the impact on God's glory which results from those errors.

Warfield masterfully states, outlines and dissects the major views of the created's relationship to the Creator. The topics cover the span from a salvation possessed by all to salvation given by God to those he chooses.

If you are not sure where your theology is classified, read this book. Warfield succinctly outlines all major types of Christian theology. The book has a very useful table on "The Decrees of God" that also explains nearly all theological sub-groups within the spectrum of the Christian church. It is useful for Christians to posses this knowledge.

Serious thought about choosing a plan for eternal (that is a long time) life
By j perrill
There are only two main options- either a plan set out by God or one scrambled together by man. Warfield shows that man's plan actually has lots of religious variations, but not are sufficient. God's plan as set forth in the Bible is clearly sufficient and will stand for eternity. Well worth the time to study the difference in these plans and hopefully trust the good news plan

The best bilingual edition
By Alexandra Carbone
This bilingual series is really great, we have a number of the titles. The illustrations are all made by different artists, and they are all unique and inspired. The Snow White edition, as you can see from the cover, has scratchy goth-looking characters with dark circles under their eyes, which resonates with the dark themes in the story. The only minus for me is that it is pretty verbose, which makes it difficult for kids to figure out what it means in the language they may not be as strong in.

Our favorite in the series is probably the Little Red Riding Hood one; it has cuter illustrations and slightly less text; they are all great though.Little Red Riding Hood/Caperucita Roja (Bilingual Fairy Tales)

About the Author

Daniele Teti

Daniele Teti is a software architect, trainer, and consultant with over 18 years of professional experience. He writes code in a number of languages but his preferred language to compile native software is Object Pascal. Daniele is a well-known Delphi and programming expert in the developer community. He's the main developer and drives the development of some Delphi open source projects (DelphiMVCFramework; DORM, "the Delphi ORM"; Delphi Redis Client; and so on). He wrote his first program when he was 11 years old, and since then, he happily continues to write software almost every day. Apart from Delphi, he's a huge fan of design patterns, expert systems, RESTful architectures, and Android OS. When he is not busy writing software or programming (as his job or hobby), he likes to play the guitar, write songs, and do voluntary activities. Currently, he works as an R&D Director & Educational at bit Time Software (www.bittime.it), an Italian representative of Embarcadero Technologies (www.embarcadero.com). He recently became the CEO of bit Time Professionals, which is a spin-off company of bit Time Software; this company specializes in consultancy, training, and development. Being a software architect, consultant, and teacher for many Italian and European companies, he travels very often around the world. He is the Technical Director of ITDevCon, the biggest European Delphi conference (www.itdevcon.it). He's also an international speaker at many technical conferences. Daniele lives in Rome, Italy (where each photographer becomes an artist) with his beloved wife, Debora, and their little boy, Mattia.

this book is a nice refresher as well as a way to catch up ...
By Philippe Randour
For all those who have not worked with Delphi for a long time or for those who have been stuck with older versions of Delphi, this book is a nice refresher as well as a way to catch up on new features and capabilities. For people new to Delphi, it is a great overview of what is possible with the more recent versions of this fantastic product.

The format and presentation as a cookbook makes it particularly useful as a reference book, also considering the fact that the concepts and examples are directly related to real world situations. The book can certainly be used as a starting point for various projects. The vast experience of the author is clearly visible behind all this.

Another interesting aspect of the book is the presence of all those links to reference material to go deeper into all the topics that were presented. A great added value.

Overall, a very good book that I highly recommend.

Wide material, something to learn for everyone
By David Millington
Covers an amazingly wide variety of topics, with examples that show a lot more than just the nominal subject. It shows 'modern Delphi' - the 2014 environment and language and capabilities. There's something in here even for experienced Delphi programmers, but if you haven't used Delphi for a long time, read it to get a great overview of the state of the language. If you're new to Delphi and need to learn, this book will cover the entire environment, and you'll be up to speed with a good general knowledge of the development environment quickly.

Some of the post-recipe discussion could have more detail.

Buy it? Yes.

A good mix of recipes
By John Kaster
Before proceeding with my review, you may want to read this other review by Simon J Stuart which provides a good overview of what you can find in the book. I also received a review copy from the publisher, and I’m glad I requested one!

Overall impression

The book uses a great pattern, where a topic is introduced, code is shown to demonstrate it, explanations and observations about the technique are discussed, and suggestions for additional usage or other resources are provided. This “explore more” section of the book may actually be its most valuable part, because Daniele provides specific links that point to good resources to use for each of the recipes covered.

The code examples are useful and as concise as is reasonable.

The order of the book is logical and does a good job of building on some of the previous recipes in later parts of the book:
1.Delphi Basics
2.Become a Delphi Language Ninja
3.Going Cross-Platform with FireMonkey
4.The Thousand Faces of Multithreading
5.Putting Delphi on the Server
6.Riding the Mobile Revolution with FireMonkey
7.Using Specific (mobile) Platform Features

This is a valuable book to keep handy for when you may need to implement any of the techniques it covers. In short, it is exactly what a “cookbook” should be, with quick and reliable recipes to help you create a good solution for a technical issue.

Some specifics

For example, there’s a great, short exploration for taking advantage of generics. Hidden in one of the discussed “higher order” functions for generics (map, reduce/fold, filter) is something that deserves to be called out briefly in the book (although it is not).

class function HigherOrder.Filter(InputArray: TArray;
FilterFunction: TFunc): TArray;
var
I: Integer;
List: TList;
begin
List := TList.Create;
try
for I := 0 to length(InputArray) - 1 do
if FilterFunction(InputArray[I]) then
List.Add(InputArray[I]);
Result := List.ToArray;
finally
List.Free;
end;
end;

This small sample shows one of the cleaner methods of populating a dynamic array result that can subsequently be lifetime managed by the runtime. The TList object is efficient for growing one item at a time. A dynamic array is not. Often, the result for the dynamic array is preallocated to some high bound (in the sample above, it would be the length of the input array), then resized before the return to shrink the array back down to the number of elements matching the filter. By using TList, then freeing it, the array size is only manipulated once and the List.ToArray call makes the code clean and sustainable.

Mobile development with Firemonkey

The book has many detailed and useful examples for mobile development with FireMonkey. This is the section of the book where I learned the most, because I haven’t worked on mobile apps with Delphi. There are many useful tidbits covered in this section that are important for mobile development: using mobile databases, implementing server and client-side functionality, camera and phone manipulation, application lifecycle awareness, and more.

Platform-specific features

The platform-specific features chapter goes beyond mobile FireMonkey recipes to making calls from Delphi to iOS and Android SDK calls, and is an excellent way to wrap up the book.

Other recipes I’d like to see

Some things I think would be good to have in the book are:
•In the UI section: ◦effective use of actions
◦effective use of frames
◦input value validations (form validation)

•in the section on streaming, it would be handy to explore reliable determination of the encoding used by a file.
•for threading, effective use of the new XE7 Parallels library
•for Delphi on the server, ◦how to secure your web application (including using secure CDN resources for jQuery, etc)
◦using dynamic arrays and records for JSON to avoid all the “free” calls for TObjectList (this works very well with SuperObject, for example)

A minor nit

I don’t understand what Daniele means by “bounce” as in: “I see too many business applications that are composed by a bounce of dialog windows.”

Conclusion

Daniele did a great job on this book, and I hope he continues to update it with new recipes in the future.

Not most recent but most basic
By Alan Venable
Despite its being about 80 years old and the first systematic study of Edward de Vere as Shakespeare, this is also still the best book on the subject. Anderson's recent biography of de Vere is also good and more fun to read, but Looney goes much more deeply into the span of basic arguments behind his conclusion that de Vere wrote all of "Shakespeare's" work, including closely examining the poetry that appeared under de Vere's own name and how it links to Shakespeare's poems and plays.

Looney doesn't spend a lot of pages on why Shakespeare of Stratford is unlikely to have written the works, but he does get into that some. A fun way to enter that topic is Mark Twain's short, marvelous "Is Shakespeare Dead Yet?"

Looney's style is outmoded, sometimes verbose and overly insistent, but there's so much meat on them bones that, if the subject matters to you, you'll get past these stylistic irritations. If they bug you too much, read Anderson instead.

One of the fascinating things is that Looney apparently began with a set of criteria, based on Shakespeare's works, about who their author must likely have been, and then used those criteria to pick out de Vere as the most likely candidate.

Although Looney's study was limited by knowledge still undiscovered at the time about de Vere's life (including his trial for atheism and other nastiness and his having a child with Anne Vavasor who was probably the dark lady of the sonnets), pretty much everything essential that Looney writes seems consistent with those more recent discoveries.

If you started exploring the authorship question with Alan Nelson's very recent biography of de Vere, don't let yourself think Nelson has answered the question without reading Looney and/or Anderson.

Pioneering revisionist Shakespeare work, with surprising implications
By Rerevisionist
Looney's double-o is for emphasis, in some languages, e.g. Dutch, as in 'brooch' - everyone points out he isn't pronounced to rhyme with 'loony'. This book was published in 1920, after some years' work. It's not the first alternative authorship book: in 1910 for example a Baconian work was published. Looney is always described as a schoolmaster or teacher in Gateshead (a town on the other side of the Tyne from Newcastle), though so far as I know, no school in the area claims him.

Looney's method was to comb the plays for clues as to character, then comb what's known of the Elizabethan world for a person to match, detective fashion. It would be inaccurate to state that controversy raged thereafter. He was largely ignored and shrugged off. But he must have made a bit of impact, since one volume of Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga mentions the theory.

This book therefore has some historical significance. Just a few notes:
[1] It's a tremendous proving-ground for theories of revisionism. Every possible attitude - derision, contempt, accusations of ignorance, etc - and every possible style of counter-argument - pulling of rank, ridicule, concentration on trivia etc - has been used against Looney, and, for that matter, by his supporters when on the defensive.
[2] In principle, deletion of the 'Stratford man' (probably an illiterate war profiteer in food) should allow a far better appreciation of the Elizabethan period. This means historians would have to do some hard work, however. (One edition of this book included an excellent description by Capt. Ward of England as engaged in a war with Spain, comparable with the First World War, and far removed from the ahistorical merrie England stereotype of for example 'Shakespeare in Love').
[3] What does it matter? - Well, there's an effect on educational theory. Occasionally , educators look at the real world, and even more occasionally, at genius. Their view of 'Shakespeare' therefore is of some importance. If the traditional story is correct, genius can appear anywhere, even to someone of little education, who is thought to be able to deduce almost everything about the world. But if Looney is right, education is of paramount importance. Present-day acceptance of poor educational standards therefore owes something to the 'Shakespeare' myth.
________________

I haven't seen this paperback, which I assume is a straight reprint of the 1920 book, 1920 typography and all.

Looney struck lucky - on his quest he found just one single published poem by Oxford, 'Women', which conformed to his checklist of characteristics. This was the clue which he followed up relentlessly.

There's a two volume American edition of 1975, edited by Ruth Lloyd Miller, which of course has added material - including a good piece by a Captain Ward, pointing out that there was war with Spain at the time and that as a result there was widespread poverty, famine, and high food prices. The 'merrie England' stuff as in 'Shakespeare in Love' is fnatasy. Miller's volumes are lavishly produced with may monochrome and colour reproductions of portraits etc.

However; I do have something of a warning. De Vere put his own life story into his plays and sonnets. As you come to understand 'Shakespeare' it becomes clear that de Vere was an aristocrat obsessed by his own sidelining - he was a monstrous egotist. His work describes Elizabeth's court with unsparing accuracy, but beneath it all is an aristocratic world view with no room for the masses - unless they are amusing writer/actor types.

A further point: the 'Shakspere' mythology has been guarded by a ridiculous corps of professional careerists. To this date, this still applies, though possibly the USA is shedding this absurd skin more successfully that Britain. However, a similar pattern is appearing amongst the Oxfordians, who have their own ring of paid journals and publications and speakers. I tried to get a 50 minute speech by Burford/Beauclerk on Youtube, to help diffuse the message more widely. He didn't want it up there, possibly on copyright grounds, or because he considered it lacklustre, though in my view it was an excellent introductory overview. Most of the content was Looney, paraphased.

Seminal work - just too bad it's so poorly edited
By Russael
This is a must read book, but unfortunately this version is marred badly by typographical errors. In a book where close reading of poetry is so central to the argument, the many, many errors mean that it is impossible to follow the proof except in a general sense. I am frustrated. Over and over Google advertises it was they who destroyed this book. Really badly done.

Triad: Book One

Magical species must never mix. According to the rules, Simon Osborne should ignore the children’s cries for help. After all, they’re werewolf cubs, and he’s an apprentice mage. But for once in his life, Simon breaks the rules and rescues the cubs, saving them from a demon intent on draining them of their magic.

Of course, all actions have consequences, and Simon’s bold move earns him the displeasure of his peers and the attention of the cubs’ alpha, a man named Gray Townsend.

The last thing Gray needs is a mage in his life, but Simon did save his son. Since Simon is now a friend of the pack, Gray doesn’t have much choice about it—or the forbidden attraction that goes along with it. Unfortunately for the alpha, he needs Simon’s help to track down the demon behind the kidnappings—before it strikes again. Simon and Gray must join forces to protect the pack, even as they struggle to resist the temptation that threatens to destroy them both.

Absolutely Loved This
By JayReads
This book grabbed me from the beginning and I loved every minute of the story. The mage/shifter/vampire combination was great. Simon captured my heart right at the beginning with his unselfish rescue of the children.

Simon and Gray were beautiful together and the ease with which they came together was refreshing, no torment here. The supporting characters worked well together and the children were adorable.

Poppy Dennison has a hit on her hands with this one. Definitively a recommend read and I am impatiently waiting for a sequel to this one.

Great plot, great characters but a little open-ended
By Nikyta
4.5 stars

This was one of those stories that grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. It's unique in the sense of how the world is set up, the pacing and the writing is amazing to where it keeps your attention while progressing the story at a good pace. The characters where interesting and intriguing while the plot had a few twists and turns.

I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this story. Mostly because I've been in such a funk lately that I can't seem to finish a book in one sitting anymore. With this book, however, I read it and didn't want to put it down. I didn't even want to pause to go to sleep or do all those menial chores I needed to get done. It was easy for me to connect with these characters, though, because Simon is just so loveable and I adored his obsession with plants. Gray is just the right amount of alpha where he's not overly dominate but he still gives off that power that's attractive. I honestly loved these boys and was sad when the story ended.

The secondary characters were funny and cute. I loved Gray's son, Garon, he was just so adorable. Cormac I was particularly interested in because he seemed so tame for a vampire. And I'm definitely intrigued by the other wolves in Gray's pack (especially Liam and Cade). I loved the way this book started and how it progressed. The mystery was good although I had a suspicion of who was doing it all but I still really enjoyed it because it brought Gray and Simon closer together. I loved how easily Simon was accepted into the pack and really liked how they treated him like he was someone special.

The only thing wrong was the story is it's a bit open-ended. I still have a few questions about it all and I really want to see how Gray and Simon deal with all that wasn't resolved in this story. Hopefully we'll get another book about them as well as getting ones for all those other secondary characters I enjoyed.

All in all, a fantastic story. It really captured my attention, the writing was solid, the plot interesting with unique attributes and the characters were especially lovable. I know this is definitely a book I can re-read and I'm anxiously awaiting any sequels to come. Recommended!

From the Inside Flap

You know what value investing is: it's how Warren Buffett made his billions. Perhaps you're even familiar with value investing terminology, such as margin of safety and intrinsic value. And maybe you've already found success with value investing and know from experience that it's the most reliable way to achieve market-beating returns and accumulate significant wealth. Congratulations!

Whether you're a complete beginner in need of an A-to-Z value investing primer, an experienced investor looking to expand and fine-tune your repertoire of value investing skills, or an individual or institutional investor looking to identify the best money managers, this book is for you. In writing it, authors John Heins and Whitney Tilson have achieved a remarkable feat: They've brought together the collective wisdom of today's most successful value investors and distilled it into a series of actionable lessons you can put into practice right away.

Based on extensive interviews with market-beating money managers, superstar hedge fund managers and mutual fund heroes, and featuring many real-world examples, The Art of Value Investing expertly describes:

  • The philosophies behind today's most successful value investing strategies
  • The key skills top market-beaters think of as absolutely indispensable to success
  • The types of situations and market inefficiencies value investor legends look to exploit
  • How top value investors generate new investing ideas
  • How to research companies, with insights on company valuation and deciding what and when to buy
  • How the best value investors maintain mental and emotional discipline
  • How value investing superstars learn from their mistakes and the key lessons they've learned
  • Portfolio management techniques, including guidance on diversification, risk management, position-sizing, and more

But The Art of Value Investing does much more than impart information. It was designed to help you develop an approach to value investing that's just right for you.

Sit ten or a dozen of the most successful practitioners down in a room and you're likely to get as many opinions on which value investment flavor is best. While they're certain to agree on the core principles, when it comes to particulars, such as large-cap versus small-cap, telecom versus transportation, East versus West, onsite research versus pure data analysis, there's bound to be disagreement—some of it vehement.

The trick is to find the combination of tools, techniques and strategies that is right for you, addresses your specific financial goals, and best fits your personality and emotional makeup. And that's where The Art of Value Investing comes in.

Giving you unparalleled access to the thinking of the brightest and best of the value investing world, The Art of Value Investing can save you years of frustrating (and expensive) trial-and-error. With the helping hand of value investing luminaries such as Julian Robertson, Seth Klarman, David Einhorn, Joel Greenblatt, Mason Hawkins, Jean-Marie Eveillard, Bill Ackman and Bill Nygren, to name a few, you'll discover your preferred strategies for exploiting market inefficiencies, researching and valuing companies, identifying industry sectors and geographic regions in which to invest, timing buys and sells, managing your emotions, and much more.

More for inspiration than methodology...
By James M. Bogin
The Art of Value Investing is a book, and it's about investing, but it's not really an investment book in the traditional sense of the word. Each chapter is filled with inspirational paragraphs, quotes, quips, and ideas from individual value investors, both famous and less famous. It's the kind of book you might like to have on your shelf next to your desk, and pull down every now and again for inspiration, to remind yourself of your quest and what matters in investment. It's not really the sort of book you would want to sit down and read at one go in a coffee shop. Still, I'm happy to own this book and enjoy opening it up to random pages. It's very readable. All of the people quoted on the back cover saying what a wonderful book this is, are also quoted inside the book. This is a little annoying to me. But still.....you'll want to have this on your shelf.

Could be Great, but Falls Short
By Greywolf
This book just might contain all of the secrets to successful investing, but you will need to figure out much of it on your own. The biggest problem with the book is that it intentionally does not draw any conclusions. The authors even open by saying “we’ve provided a full range of potential answers and the justification for each.” The problem is that the justification is not always fully flushed out, leaving the reader to determine what the best strategy might be. Additionally, the authors state the book is for the “just-starting-out investor.” I have read dozens of investment books over the last 30 years, thank god this was not one of the first, for the book does very little to explain the rational being the ideas espoused.

If one were to take the time to synthesis the information in the book a cohesive investment strategy could be developed, but the flaw in the book is that the author did not do that for the reader. Instead they provided quotes from professional money managers and let the reader figure out which advice to follow and what to ignore.

Many of the ideas are very contradictory, or not very applicable to the individual investor. One example would be the discussion on number of securities to hold. How many stocks held by a fund with billions under management and numerous analysts is mostly irrelevant to the individual investor.

The important parts of this book could easily have been condensed to pamphlet size. Much of what is quoted is essentially meaningless. . Insight such as “we generally want to own only those things that can be bought out” is not very useful to me when making a decision on what to invest in.

The authors did the research to gather all of the insight from the pros, the problem is they did very little with it to make it valuable to the average reader or investor. I’m left feeling that if I were to spend many more hours I could take the information in the book and put it in a more useful format, but why would I do that when those books already exists?

Another Book Review from the Aleph Blog
By David Merkel
I am a value investor. That's what I do for a living, and I do it well. One month ago. I wrote a piece called "Value Investing Flavors." In it, I took a broad view of value investing, because there are many common principles to value investing employed by all, but many variations on implementation. [Note to those reading at Amazon; they don't me post links, but if you Google "Aleph Art of Value Investing" you will find it.]

The Art of Value Investing takes a similarly broad view, quoting well over 100 value investors (I lost count) on topics where professional value investors agree & disagree. The authors have interviewed the grand majority of those cited, and have useful historical quotes from well-known figures familiar with the subject. Better known and more accomplished value investors tend to get more play in the book -- I think the authors chose well.

The book is organized by topic. It covers these questions:

* The importance of a margin of safety
* Buy high margin quality businesses, or cheap low margin businesses?
* What attention should be paid to growth opportunities? (Controversial)
* What is your circle of competence? (I.e. what opportunities do you rule out because you don't get how to value them?)
* How small of a company would you consider buying?
* How much do you incorporate top-down macroeconomic considerations?
* What countries would you not consider buying a company within?
* The advantage of being able to buy and hold for years.
* How careful research often conquers uncertainty.
* Do you buy turnarounds or not? (Controversial)
* How do you generate good buy ideas?
* How do you create a firm that ignores the conventional perspective, and generates correct ideas that few know?
* How do you analyze what could go wrong with a company?
* Do you look for catalysts to unlock value or not? (Controversial)
* Do you analyze value through one framework or many? Cheap going concern or transformation of underused assets? Both?
* Do you manage for absolute value or relative value? I.e., what is the value of safe assets, or even gold?
* When do you establish an position? How do you size it?
* How diversified do you want to be? How do you weight positions?
* How much do you care about stocks being correlated within the portfolio?
* How long are you willing to wait to see if an idea works? When do you admit that you are wrong?
* Are you willing to advise management? Are you willing to fight management? When does it make sense?
* Do you short bad stocks or not?
* When do you sell? Do you do it never, gradually or rapidly?
* How do you maintain a sound mind and humility amid all of the clamor of the markets?
* How do you admit mistakes, so as to avoid them in the future, and show humility to your clients?

If you want to understand the nuances of how a firm doing value investing works, I can't think of a better book, because this book implicitly goes over all of the choices that a value investor has to make. What factors will I focus on, and what will I ignore? How detailed will my analysis be? How much will I diversify? How will I make choices among so many stocks vying for my attention amid all of the news noise?

I have strong views on value investing myself, but I questioned my own ideas as I read the replies of those more successful than me.

Quibbles

Initially, as I read the book, I wondered if a better book could be made by organizing by each firm, rather than topic. By the end of the book, I realized I was wrong. Not all firms have opinions on many questions, and doing the book by topic highlights the variation in opinions across a wide spectrum of organizations.

Who would benefit from this book: Amateur and professional value investors will benefit from this book; if the reader does not want to put the effort into learning value investing, this book will be of no use to him.
