I love ghost stories!

This is a great little book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a ghost story that has some creepiness, but is one of those that you feel good about when everything is finally revealed.

Cameron and his mom move around a lot. They are always running from Cameron's dad who seems to not be a nice guy. This final move brings them to the old farmhouse that seems like it needs to be demolished by the way Cameron describes it. Needless to say he's not happy at having to leave his friends behind this last time and has a hard time making friends at the new school.

One of the boys he talks to says the place is haunted, a man was killed there by his own guard dogs.

Cameron starts seeing things, first just movements here and there. But then, he sees a little boy and starts talking to him. In between thinking he is losing his mind, Cameron starts on a search for the people that used to live there. He gets some information from their landlord that lives on the farm next door. He gets more information in different places.

But when he starts acting strange his mom and her new boyfriend wonder if something is happening to him. Is he going crazy like his father?

Read this wonderful little book and find out what really happened on the farm and who the ghosts are and how everything comes to a bitter-sweet end.

I love the book and I love that creepy house on the cover. :)

Paranormal read

I was excited to grab this book at the library the other day as I have heard it was creepy and scary. After reading it, I feel that this novel will appeal to the younger YA crowd than to the older crowd based on its content. I enjoyed the story and I liked how the author told the story. As you move through the novel, the author releases the details slowly and adds them to the storyline, there are no big dumps of information and all the information is pertinent to the novel. As the main character starts to unravel or clarify the information on the mystery he was solving, the author does a fantastic job explaining how everything fits together. I always find it frustrating when I’m reading a novel and as the mystery is getting solved, the author is not clear how the pieces fit together. For a YA novel, Allan Stratton could not have done a better job on making this clearer for his readers. I didn’t find the book as thrilling or as riveting as I expected it to be but the paranormal aspect of the book was wonderful. I am used to the creeper aspect of paranormal activity than the mysterious side which I feel this novel undertook so I feel this toned the novel down in intensity for me. For Cameron sees Jacky, he calls to him and sometimes he answers and other times, he doesn’t but Jacky is a part of Cameron’s life now. Cameron’s dad, he’s not a part of Cameron’s life and that is a choice that Cameron’s mom made as she moves Cameron and herself around, for she fears that he is there….somewhere out there watching and he will be back. The farmhouse seems like a nice place to settle down for a while, it’s remote and yet it’s close to a city. The house has a history and Cameron; he’s bound and determined to find out what it is before he becomes a part of it.

Finally, a good one!

This book by J. M. Thijssen is a rare gem. You note this as you browse the index. Quantum scattering, variational methods for the Schrödinger equation, the Hartree-Fock method, density functional theory, classical and quantum molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods and transfer matrix methods. Even a solid chapter on lattice field theory! The book isn't child's play (like most books on computational physics), but a beautifully written text covering both physical and computational issues, superficially but concisely. A neat selection of references guides readers to comprehensive, modern literature. The right balance of tricks and theory puts the readers few steps away from developing their own code. I don't award the fifth star because software engineering and object orientation issues are ignored.

Good book for the price

This book was assigned in a class I took on the computer modeling of materials. The text itself was slightly above my understanding; but thats fine, I just was not prepared for it. The problem is that there are many exercises that require the reader to download software from the author's web site, and use it to perform calculations. Many times the software did not work as intended, and so the professor had to spend time correcting the code, or writing his own version. And of course there were the usual problems of installing the code properly, compiling it, and executing it. This idea would have worked much better if the necessary code was put onto a CD-ROM that came packaged with the book. For the software problems I dock one star out of five.

The introduction states that this text is intended for graduate students in physics, chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering, and who have taken classes in numerical analysis. I think a more appropriate wording is that this text is for someone versed in all of these listed fields. There is extensive use of thermodynamics, symmetry and crystal structure, linear algebra, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, etc... This book should not be used as an introductory guide to computational physics or related fields. The necessary prerequisite knowledge is quite extensive.

The intro should specify at least 2 college classes in computer programming as a prerequisite for this book. The programming assignments included at the end of each chapter are quite challenging, and should not be attempted by someone without previous experience in writing mathematical codes. This here lies another problem with the approach taken by this book. Most science and engineering majors will take 1-2 courses in programming as part of their university education, but these classes often emphasize business applications such as reading / writing to a text file, creating and using databases, formatting of screen output, linked lists, etc... These skills are not very useful in writing a code to do computations. For the latter, needed skills include parsing data, recognizing patterns, using built-in functions, importing and using algorithms from online libraries. utilizing large matrices and vectors, etc...

What the author should have done for each computational homework problem is to write out the solution (code) himself, add in the documentation, and then removed the code while leaving the documentation intact. The student can then use the documentation to craft his/her own solution.

For the difficulty of the computing problems, and of the text in general, I dock another star.

Therefore, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

The best computational physics book available

This is a very decent book on computational physics, focusing primarily on condensed matter. It's up there with Allen and Tildesley's "Computer Simulation of Liquids", though with a broader selection of subjects and more suited to physicists.

There are inevitable errors, some of which would take a bit of effort to fix were it not for the error web page the author maintains.

Many problems in condensed matter are tackled, always with a view toward implementing an actual numerical investigation (this may sound like a given, but several other texts seem to shy away from actually using a computer, exploiting some variant of 'computational' in the title as an excuse to write yet another redundant physics text that is only cursorily computational). Often, nice snippets of pseudocode are presented, along with suggestions for numerical control parameters to use and the corresponding numerical results obtained - so one can try things out and check the answer. Indeed, the book is best used if one sets about to write code to solve problems, both in the main text and in the exercises at the chapter ends. As is often the case, however, getting a piece of new code to behave correctly can be a bit of a pain, which becomes easier only with experience.

In a real sense, the text helps bring some physics to life, and one is rewarded, I think, with a clearer understanding, and some powerful tools at one's disposal.

Though it doesn't have any real competitor, there is room for a second edition: along with correcting errors, several subjects could do with a bit more discussion or even extensive treatment, and other things could profitably be included, e.g., a DFT implementation of Car-Parrinello quantum atomic dynamics.

About the Author
Ian Morris is the Willard Professor of Classics and a fellow of the Stanford Archaeology Center at Stanford University. He has directed excavations in Italy and Greece and has published thirteen previous books, including Why the West Rules--for Now (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), The Measure of Civilization (Princeton), and War! What Is It Good For? (FSG). He lives in Boulder Creek, California.

An oddly structured book

This is a very strange book. It is better described as a poorly communicated thesis, a set of responses by others to the thesis, and then a response where the author finally gets his points out.

In brief, Morris suggests that core human values are evolutionary adaptations, but that these values are somewhat flexible and culturally adaptive. He then divides human history into three realms or phase transitions defined primarily by our rate of energy capture -- foragers, farmers and fossil fuel societies. Then he goes into three specific values which differe dramatically between the phase transitions -- propensity to use violence, egalitarianism and gender equality.

In the first set of chapters he lays out his facts. To those familiar with evolutionary psychology it will seem pretty obvious.

Then a series of people, obviously not familiar with evolutionary psychology or cultural evolution theory tear into Morris' ideas. In general they miss the point by a mile. It is like hearing creationists argue with an evolutionary biologist.

Then, in chapter 10, the book gets good. Morris finally lays out exactly what his thesis is clearly and explicitly.

Here are my thoughts:
1). I am not sure why he focuses on these three values. Are these the only ones which differed dramatically? Are these the only ones he is interested in? Or are they the only ones that support his thesis?
2). On violence it seems he conflate in tribe/ state and between tribe/ state violence. I think these are separate phenomena which require separate analysis.
3). On egalitarianism, he similarly conflates material equality with hierarchical or political dominance. Again, I am not sure why.
4) Morris suggests that each age gets the values it needs. It seems to me that a better explanation is that humans value dominance for themselves and that based upon the social context they are forced to settle for equilibriums. Foragers would love to all be alphas. However, in a world of effective weapons and easy exit where nobody wants to be a beta, the equilibrium point for effective social groups is egalitarianism.

Similarly, each gender would love to be dominant of its counterpart. In Farming societies, men were able to attain the upper hand, and women were forced to submit to thrive. In forager societies this is less true, and modern societies with high energy capture and high standards of living and state security nets and appliances which free women from housework, this is simply no longer true.

The same applies to violence. We may be fine with violence when it serves our needs. Problem is that this creates a struggle and zero sum dynamic. The equilibrium point in forager societies is to maintain peace within the tribe but to fracture and splinter with uncontrollable violence between tribes. In farmers, without exit freedom, tied to the land with some specializing in violence, the natural equilibrium is hierarchy, with the elite caring for their human livestock. In modern liberal states, the optimal equilibrium is networks of voluntary trade and egalitarian rights which shrivel up in environments of violence.

I would agree with Morris that our values are contextually adaptive. I do think that we greatly rationalize and tailor them to conditions. Those in hierarchies rationalize their position, those in violence rationalize and tailor and so on.

Energy Is Destiny

Ian Morris convincingly demonstrates that the sources of energy available to a given society determine what types of values can thrive in that society. Mr. Morris segments the last twenty thousand years in three broadly successive systems of human values on a worldwide basis: Foraging values, farming values, and fossil-fuel values. The author acknowledges that his approach to human history for that period is reductionist, strongly materialist, mostly universalist, functionalist, and explicitly evolutionist.

Mr. Morris makes his case by starting with two assumptions based on what human biology has shown for the ten to fifteen thousand years since farming began:

1. Nearly all humans care deeply about some core values such as fairness, justice, love, hate, respect, loyalty, preventing harm, and a sense that some things are sacred.
2. These core values are biologically evolved adaptations.

These two assumptions lead the author to make two claims:

1. The last twenty thousand years can be subdivided into three broad stages during which humans have shown how they have interpreted these biologically evolved core values. These three stages mostly correlate with the three major methods, i.e. foraging, farming, and fossil fuels, that humans have perfected for capturing energy from their environment.
2. Changes in energy capture cause changes in human values.

Foragers have low tolerance for political and wealth inequality. However, they display a “middling” acceptance of gender inequality and violence.

Farmers consider political, wealth, and gender inequality a good thing. Nonetheless, they tend to be less tolerant of violence than foragers.

Fossil-fuel users have a negative perception of political and gender inequality. Furthermore, they have even less tolerance of violence than farmers. In contrast, fossil-fuel users adopt a “middling” acceptance of wealth inequality. Mr. Morris is here at his weakest when one reviews the lamentable catalog of human horrors since the 18th century saw the emergence of the Industrial Revolution in the United Kingdom.

These two above-mentioned claims raise two implications:

1. Fossil-fuel values are the right interpretations of our biologically evolved core values because we live in a fossil-fuel world. For this reason, forager and farming values are wrong until what the author calls Industria also passes into history.
2. The interpretations of our biologically evolved core values will evolve faster than ever before across the 21st century. Why? Energy capture is changing faster than ever before.

To his credit, Mr. Morris systematically addresses the diverse arguments made against his reductionist, strongly materialist, mostly universalist, functionalist, and explicitly evolutionist approach to human history. One cannot escape from the overall impression that many of these critiques get into the weeds while losing track of the big picture.

In summary, the author invites his readers to consider how important energy capture has been in modeling human values for the last twenty thousand years.

Illuminating Argument On the Origin of Value Systems

This is broad brush history of the most interested kind, examining how human value systems arose, and what caused them to change. To survey so wide a scope in such a limited space (this is not a long book) of course risks over-simplification and over-schematization. But Morris is aware of these risks, and presents a compelling argument despite them.

The first part of the book presents Morris's central case: that a human value system reflect the constraints on the society that possesses that value system. Specifically, he focusses on "energy capture" -- how many kilocalories a day the average person in a society can command. Initially, when humans were hunter/gatherers, this was very low, creating small populations that needed large ranges to feed themselves. Such cultures tend to be egalitarian and quite violent. As people gradually domesticated plants and animals, the amount of energy that an individual could command jumped, and the evolution into agrarian societies produced a shift in values, to a more hierarchical and less violent structure. Finally, when people gained control over fossil fuels, the amount of energy each member of society could command surged again. The value structure changed rapidly, to a more egalitarian and even less violent model.

In the second part of the book, various commentators give their opinions of Morris's arguments. I was disappointed in this section: many of the arguments seemed to slide by Morris's own case, without much contact. For example, one commentator proposes a "real" value system towards which people strive, without explicitly rejecting Morris's argument that value systems arise from economic and cultural conditions. Things improve in the final section, in which Morris restates his case, rather more explicitly.

This is an odd format, and a short book (particularly given the scope of the subject) but I found it fascinating. On the strength of that, I am now going to read one of Morris's other books, to see if it is as good.

Second, in many ways Ball State is a "representative," even paradigmatic American university. Targeting mainly students from its region, Ball State has had virtually open admission standards for most of its history. It has lived what we call the "Jacksonian" vision of access to education. It has also followed a trajectory similar to many other American universities as it moved from normal school to teachers' college to comprehensive university.Indeed, the authors argue, it is the Ball States of America that best define this nation's "genius" in higher education, separating this country's system of higher education from those of other countries. Ball State University, then, is both distinctive and representative - a fascinating case study in educational history.

About the Author
Bruce Geelhoed is Director for the Center for Middletown Studies and Professor of History at Ball State University. His fields of specialization include American business history and recent American history. He is author of Charles E. Wilson and Controversy at the Pentagon, 1953 to 1957, The Dragon and the Snake (with Millicent Anne Gates), and Margaret Thatcher: In Triumph and Downfall, as well as numerous articles that have appeared in state and regional journals.

Anthony Edmonds has taught at Ball State University since 1969. He is a professor of history, a winner of five outstanding teaching awards, and the author of Joe Louis and The War in Vietnam.

Alfred R. Mele is the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University. He is the author of eight books from Oxford University press: Irrationality (1987), Springs of Action (1992), Autonomous Agents (1995), Motivation and Agency (2003), Free Will and Luck (2006), Effective Intentions (2009), Backsliding (2012), and A Dialogue on Free Will and Science (2014). He also is the editor of The Philosophy of Action (OUP 1997) and a coeditor of four other OUP volumes: Mental Causation (1993), The Oxford Handbook of Rationality (2004), Rationality and the Good (2007), and Free Will and Consciousness: How Might They Work? (2010).

Advanced Work that Covers Many Unusual Aspects of Stat Mech

This little book is a great buy for the advanced undergraduate or graduate student who has already had some exposure to Statistical Mechanics. Schrodinger's influence on modern physics is well known (The Schrodinger Equation, Schrodinger's Cat, Schrodinger's Method), but less well known is his clear and lucid writing style, exemplified in popular works such as "What is Life," but also seen in this more specialized text. This being true however, Schrodinger assumes knowledge of basic statistical mechanics, so it's a good idea to have a standard reference like Tolman or Kittel handy. The last thing is it covers many topics that simply aren't in the standard works, but tend to crop up all the time. It is for this reason a very good reference for grad students whose research involves some aspect of statistical mechanics, since documentation of the different information and techniques in this work is difficult to find outside it. Finally, you can't beat it at the price of $8.95.

An excellent guide in statistical thermodynamics

This book is an excellent guide in statistical thermodynamics. It's started with the theoretical justification of phenomenological thermodynamics and its system of concepts. In principle the methods of statistical mechanics are applicable to non-equilibrium states as well as to equilibrium properties. The author (Nobel prize,1933) treats only the theory of equilibrium properties for which the destination "Statistical Thermodynamics" has been adopted. As a consequence of the structure of phenomenological thermodynamic, statistical thermodynamics developed in this book separates into two principal parts: the derivation of thermodynamic principles and the calculation of thermodynamic functions for concrete systems. This text seems especially good for teaching basic thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. I recommend this book especially for students, because it's highest quality is the clarity of the exposed physical ideas.

Sit on the shoulder of a giant

In this book you have an opportunity to sit through 95 pages on the shoulder of a giant. Some of his observations are outdated - like his pessimism of ever seeing Bose-Einstein condensation - but this in itself is well worth the price of the book alone, to read in contemporary terms a well-informed view of the 1940s adds appreciation of the heroism of the experimental accomplishments of the 1990s that continue to the present. There are interesting insights, not available elsewhere, on just about every page. Having read this, you will be among the few who have read in its entirety a learned treatise by the great Schroedinger, in only 95 pages. That is a few days' work well spent by anyone!
