About the Author
Tom resides in Kuala Lumpur, the land of squashed frogs. He teaches 3DSMax and design as senior lecturer at Raffles International College. He trains artists for the game industry and also trains alts in EVE. He is currently shored up in a C4 WH, admiring nebulae and painting comics. He has worked as a games artist and as a broadcast CG generalist. He participates, or at least asks questions, in the UDK forum as tomacmuni, and is happy to be shown how to do things. Excellent value for junior or returning UDK level devs!

There are are hundreds if not thousands of tutorials, forums, and other materials already online about getting started with map and level design in UDK. So, while Thomas Mooney's Unreal Development Kit Game Design Cookbook (Packt Publ. 2012) does cover the fundamentals very well, I believe it is best used by developers who are already comfortable with the basics, and are looking to make rapid progress in their abilities, or someone who has a specific requirement for a complex effect or feature. The solutions provided in the book give a great deal of summary information though, and create many opportunities to improve and increase developers' UDK skills through further exploration or experimentation with the advanced concepts presented.

There are excellent step by step instructions for not only the fundamentals, but also sections on multiple complex effects and outcomes for lighting, materials, particles in Cascade, and visual scripting with Kismet, plus a badly needed comprehensive section on character setup and animation. (Alone, the translucent and transparent materials effects presented should serve to bring up the visual quality of UDK maps quite dramatically for an entire generation of young devs.) The use of third party software in conjunction with UDK provides many more capabilities, and Mooney does a great job with in-depth coverage of the process of working with Flash and Scaleform for UI.

Beyond that, the book further expands the flexibility of execution of these techniques by referencing other tutorials and resources from developers besides the author. Also at the end of the text are URLs for more than half a dozen additional downloadable recipes online. There is also a comprehensive index in the back that allows the reader to quickly and easily find or return to the sections they need.

I didn't finish every recipe in the book yet, and I came to this book with a few years experience in Unreal, but the updates and changes over the years make it difficult for the casual developer, or someone who's been away from it for awhile, to keep in step with all the versions and revisions. So I've been waiting for a book like this, as a source I can turn to for clear-cut descriptions and processes of the newer UDK development tools and techniques.

The cover price for the eBook version is very reasonable and the February 2012 release date means the content is still fresh and timely. All in all, this is an excellent value for developers that are frustrated with hunting through forums and blogs, and need to take their skills to the next level.

UDK Cookbook with loads of good recipes

This book contains many recipes for actions you will want to do, while working with the UDK. The books encompasses recipes on everything from installing the UDK, working with BSP's, importing and using your 3d models and animations into the UDK, and using Kismet for visual scripting, as well as much more.

I would recommend this book for someone who has experience using the UDK, but would recommend looking through the table of contents to see everything the book covers, for recipes they would be interested in. There is a lot of good information, which can help bring extra details and polish to your UDK projects.

Great book to learn how to put a UDK game together

I am a big fan of the UDK engine and while this book is not for complete beginners, it definitely helps to gel what I have learned in tutorials. The book provides pertinent information on the SDK and helps you to understand not only laying out a level; but how to use Kismet to make things work.

Great Read!

Guban allows one to fully appreciate and differentiate between the subtle ways of the Somali city-dweller and those in the hinterland - in their manners, customs, and ways. Ega manages to beautifully weave even the particularly florid speech of the Somalis through the astoundingly written dialogue. For the non-Somali speaker, one is almost able to understand and feel the richness of the Somali language. More importantly, Ega is able to bring forth the entire society with its many peculiarities to the reader. Through Guban, one is introduced to the existential crisis of the Commander Beheyeah, the ostentatious and haughty nature of Ali Deray, the vast losses of Hoagsaday, and the tumultuous journey of Tusmo and her two children whilst they establish themselves in the Diaspora. Travel with Tusmo as she carefully broaches her many arising complications in her once serene life.

Through Guban, one is not only able to understand the makings of another society (one entrenched in loyalty to one's family and clan) but also comprehend the manifestations of this on the Cold-War era modern state.

But, in the end, one realizes that though Tusmo, Beheyeah, Hoagsaday, and even Ali Deray may seem like foreign characters in a different world, their needs, wants, desires, problems, and complications are common to us all, and part and parcel of what makes us human.

Guban reads as a post-colonial, postmodern historical picture of Somali society within the rural hinterland and larger cities in relation to an increasingly interconnected global world. It’s rich portrayal of Somali style, women, food, culture and even manners allows the reader to envision, touch and almost taste all these aspects of Somal life. The adventures of Tusmo reveals a story of loyalty, faith and love as she traverses the darker hills and roads of Africa in pursuit of a reunion with her husband. In comparison, her husband Hoagsaday also attempts to battle his way back to his wife, and family in his own heroic fashion of love and commitment. As they both flee their home at different times in order to seek asylum in other nations their world as they knew is shattered into oblivion. While attempting to reunify their once whole family they are both faced with many a hardship and difficulty but remain steadfast in one untied notion; the reunification of their once whole family.

Guban is a wonderful book with a lot of insights through its complex and lovable characters. You are immediately sucked in from the first page inTo this seemingly discreet place worlds apart from our own. Only to understand through these beautiful humans; in their travials, hopes, dreams and human imposed difficulties. We are closer however far that we think. Guban is at once a love affair, a quest for the same in return. And a thorough depiction of the 20th centuries' through the gaze of disinfranchized citizens, the state, region and how the all of this revolves around the larger world of the Cold war. This is an intimate history and so many other things. I can say so much more, but really and truly want others to self discover. You are inserted and become witness and truly immersed in the story. I felt i was there.

About the Author

Steven A. Beebe is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Texas State University. He served as Chair of his department at Texas State for twenty-eight years and concurrently as Associate Dean for twenty-five years. Steve is the author or co-author of twelve widely used communication books, most of which have been through multiple editions (including Russian and Chinese editions), as well as numerous articles, book chapters, and conference presentations. He has been a Visiting Scholar at both Oxford University and Cambridge University in England. He made international headlines when conducting research at Oxford; he discovered a manuscript that was the partial opening chapter of a book that was to be co-authored with J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis called Language and Human Nature. Steve has traveled widely in Europe and Asia, and has played a leadership role in establishing new communication curricula in Russian universities. He has received his university’s highest awards for research and twice for service, has been recognized as Honors Professor of the year, and was named Outstanding Communication Professor by the National Speaker’s Association. In 2013 he served as President of the National Communication Association, the largest professional communication association in the world. His passions include his family and a lifelong love of music; he is a pianist and organist and a struggling cellist.

 

Susan J. Beebe’s professional interests and expertise encompass both oral and written communication. Sue has co-authored three books and has published a number of articles and teaching materials in both English and communication studies. She has received the Texas State University Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching and in Service and the College of Liberal Arts Awards for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities, in Teaching, and in Service. After serving as Director of Lower-Division Studies in English for eleven years, Sue retired in 2014 from the Department of English at Texas State. An active volunteer in the community of San Marcos, Texas, Sue was the founding coordinator of the San Marcos Volunteers in Public Schools Program and has served on the San Marcos School Board and the Education Foundation Board. In 1993 she was named the statewide Friend of Education by the Texas Classroom Teachers’ Association; in 2000 the San Marcos school district presented her with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Sue enjoys reading, traveling, and caring for the Beebe family cats, Luke and Bouncer. Sue and Steve have two sons: Mark, a graduate of Rice University; and Matt, a graduate of Southwestern University and a middle school teacher in nearby Austin.

 

Mark V. Redmond is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Iowa State University. In 2012 he received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Besides this book, Mark has authored an introductory text on communication theory and research, edited an upper-level text in interpersonal communication, and co-authored a public speaking text. His research focuses on social decentering (taking into account another person’s thoughts, feelings, perspectives, etc.), one of the themes incorporated in this text. His research studies include expectations associated with male–female relationships, social decentering’s impact in marriage, initial interactions between strangers, adaptation in interpersonal interactions, and intercultural communication competence. He is a Cyclone sports fan with an avocation for playing basketball at least three times a week (despite an aging hook shot). An unaccomplished piano and guitar player, he loves composing and writing songs and vows to someday complete the musical he’s been working on for twenty years. Mark and his wife Peggy have three children: Beth, a graduate of the University of Iowa and Mount Mercy University; Nicholas, a graduate of Iowa State University and McCormick Theological Seminary, and Eric, a graduate of Iowa State University and Northwest Missouri State University.

The material is presented from the viewpoints of the buyer, the advisor, the insurer, and the regulator. Forthright appraisals are offered to the various life insurer products, with suggestions for how they and the companies and producers that sell them can be evaluated. Further, while the historical emphasis on U.S. practice is retained, international practices and terminology are presented throughout. Finally, entire chapters are devoted to explanations of how life insurance products (1) fit within a personal financial planning context, (2) are taxed, (3) are relevant in estate planning, (4) assist in retirement planning, and (5) find beneficial application in many business situations. Each of these chapters reflects the latest applications, law, and tax treatment, while essential theoretical and practical background information provides a stable and lasting learning platform.
