Great Book

Out of any guitar teaching books I own, this one is my favorite. It is a larger type book with big plastic loop bindings. This makes open placement much easier. The music scales or graphics are very easy to read and the book is presented in a logical manner. This book also comes with 3 CD's which are named Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3. Very easy to use and follow. 5 stars.

After doing some reaserch on good guitar books I found this one and bought it. I've been playing the guitar on and off for about 6 years but never really took the time to learn the craft and the instrument I just looked for the tab of my favorite songs and played that. But now after years of frustration and not really knowing how to play I've decided to buy a couple of books (this one, music theory for guitarist and fretboard mastery) and start really learning how to play the guitar. Even tho as a beginner I took some lessons with 3 different teachers, this book has taught me more than all of them combined. This book is awsome for any guitarist looking to learn the fundamentals and basics. I belive it's very important to have a good base of knowledge as a musician to be able to acomplish anything you want in music. This book gives you that and more!

It may not be for everyone but it is for me

After spending a good amount of money on one-on-one guitar lesson with professional guitarists, I've gotten nowhere. It's none of any of my former teachers' fault. It's just being 47 years old with a full-time job and and another full-time job raising a family with 3 young kids leave me with little time and energy for little else for myself, and that made it more challenging to learn how to play a musical instrument. I recently got this book and its CD's, after helping my oldest daughter with her viola practices using a CD to accompany her playing along with a book. All I can say is that it was at $15 well-spent. One thing I must say though - if you don't want to practice, then no matter how much you spend, it ain't gonna help you learn or play better. The accompaniments on the CD's will make you sound better than you can really play, and that will motivate you to practice even more. Honestly, it does make me want to "grab my guitar and play it all night long."

Funny and Accurate

Whether you have children or not, this is a good read. Despites its humor, it gives a couple enough to think about before plunging into parenthood. The fact that the author herself is a mother only gives the book more crediblity. The moral of this book is look before you leap because afterwards your in for a long twenty year+ sentence.

Cute, And To The Point

At first I was put off by how small and slim this book is, but upon completion, I realized that the author had said just about everything that needs to be said on the topic. She gets to the point, and there is no filler, so if that type of thing bothers you, then search elsewhere. I was surprised by the reaction in the mommy blogs to this book. I have three kids, all of whom I love dearly, but I can't say that I disagreed with even one of the author's opinions. Parenting is hard work and often thankless, at least for some of us, and I don't find it offensive to have someone list some of the reasons why it might not be the mind-bending orgasm that many claim it to be. I took it all tongue-in-cheek, and I'd recommend this book to those who can do the same.

This book covers material taught in introductory courses in population analysis, while also including more advanced topics such as parity progression ratios, survival analysis and birth interval analysis. Most chapters are followed by a range of exercises, and a comprehensive set of solutions to these exercises is provided at the end of the book. Quattro and Excel spreadsheet files containing data for all the numerical exercises, plus some additional files of data from recent census and surveys, are available via the Internet.

A very good modern manual on demography

I think that this book is the most complete and modern manual on demography at the moment. There is a lot of information packed in its 300 pages. The author was able to offer both a good summary of the current state of the discipline and a very good presentation of its more advanced methods. With this book one can gain a good knowledge of demography, and as the author was able to present the material without unnecessary complication, and with a lot of examples, it is quite possible to read and understand a lot without a teacher.

About the Author

Chef Heston Blumenthal has been described as a culinary alchemist for his innovative style of cuisine. His work researches the molecular compounds of dishes to enable a greater understanding of taste and flavor. His restaurant, the Fat Duck, in Bray, Berkshire, England, was awarded three Michelin stars in 2004, and voted the Best Restaurant in the World by an international panel of 500 culinary experts in Restaurant magazine's list of the World's Best Restaurants 2005. Blumenthal lives in Berkshire with his wife and three children.

Scientific approach to understanding a dish, great unless you already own Heston's other books in the series...

Heston's is a chef that tirelessly, to a point of obsession, strives to bring out the essence of food to a predetermined idea of "perfection". Being a self-taught, literally (not going to culinary school/working in a professional kitchen for only a week!), Heston takes an unconventional approach not used by everyday chefs and uses the scientific method to hypothesize and determine experiments for the results he is looking for. What I really enjoyed about this book is that he dwells into the history and background of the dish; from the story of the farmers, to the use of ingredients and conventional techniques.

I guess some people may think that this book is not for the home cook. To a certain degree I can agree, due to the labor required in some of the recipes, but it is obvious that Heston had the home cook in mind while writing this book(just see his other books, Fat Duck Cookbook). Also this series was filmed for BBC as a television show. The recipes I have tried are sound and everything is written very clearly. But beyond the recipes, Heston is trying to give the home cook an idea of how to approach cooking, instilling somewhat of an intuition by having an understanding of what is going on in the food that you prepare. I find that having an understanding of why, is much more useful than a foundation of this is how.

Other books of interest would be On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen as well as Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking

Now all that being said, if you already own Heston Blumenthal's other books in the series In Search of Perfection and Further Adventures in Search of Perfection: Reinventing Kitchen Classics DO NOT GET THIS BOOK! It is simply a softcover copy of the two books put together!!! This is still a great book, but I much prefer the later two since they come hard bound, with more pictures and higher quality printing.

Heston is err, umm beston..

it's great even if you just want to read about how great food can be prepared or a small insight into Heston's mad genius.
On top of which, the recipe's have been made (somewhat) for home cooks.

amazing stories, wonderful recepies, eventho you will be able to cook probably only 4 or 5 of them. they are hard and require lots of preparation, attention etc... but he is a genius. the quality of the paperback leaves something to be desired.

About the Author

Robert W. Keidel is Clinical Professor of Management at the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University. He also is principal of Robert Keidel Associates, a consulting firm based in Philadelphia. A former corporate manager and Naval officer (Vietnam veteran), he was a senior fellow at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a program consultant at the National Center for Productivity and Quality of Working Life.

Keidel’s articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Management Science, and several other academic and practitioner-oriented journals. He is the author of three previous books: Game Plans: Sports Strategies for Business (Dutton, 1985; Berkley, 1986; Beard Books, 2006); Corporate Players: Designs for Working and Winning Together (Wiley, 1988; Beard Books, 2005); and Seeing Organizational Patterns: A New Theory and Language of Organizational Design (Berrett-Koehler, 1995; Beard Books, 2005), which was nominated for the Academy of Management’s 1996 George R. Terry Book Award.

Keidel received his BA from Williams College, and his MBA and PhD (Social Systems Sciences) from Wharton.

An actiobable approach to changing your thinking, better in hard copy but not at a premium price.

Strategy a complex and confusing area of business for the simple reason that strategy requires answering difficult questions for which there are no clear and simple answers. A lack of clear and consistent tools has created a whole strategic industrial complex as there are as many ways to do a strategy as there are stars in the sky - until now.

Robert Keidel's The Geometry of Strategy offers a simple, intuitive and powerful set of strategy tools that any one can use. Based on his personal experience as an executive, consultant and business school professor, Keidel has broken down the strategy process into its essential cognitive elements and then equated them with simple geometric shapes.

- Point thinking - its either black or white
- Linear thinking - an issue exists as choices on a spectrum
- Angular thinking - an issue is black or white - both/and
- Triangular thinking - an issue as a blend of autonomy, control and cooperation

The book focused on how to apply these different `geo-mental' (my word) models to various strategic issues and decisions. The book is organized by the different ways of thinking rather than exploring how that thinking could produce different results for the same issue.

The Table of Contents includes

Chapter 1: Decoding the complexity by isolating form
Chapter 2: Point thinking and organizational persona
Chapter 3: Linear thinking and organizational performance
Chapter 4: Angular thinking and organizational puzzle

The book is recommended for leaders looking to upgrade their strategy tools and planning processes. The tools are powerful and communicate the complexity of strategy well.

Overall a good book for a student of strategy, helpful for executives who have the time to think through these issues - that should be everyone, but often its not. If you have the time to think, and the desire to think differently and you purchase the book in hard copy, then the Geometry of Strategy is worth the investment of your time and attention.

NOTE: This book is a good investment at $15 - 25 for the hard copy, similar to the e book price. When I checked the hardcopy price on amazon was over $100, a level at which I cannot recommend the book, even though I did not get as much value from reading the eBook as I would have from having it in hard copy.

Strengths

The completeness of Keidel's treatment of the issues related to strategy and organizational definition.

The examples used to illustrate the tools and the different ways of thinking.

The illustrations that make it easy for you to see how your situation could be represented in these geometries.

Challenges

The book is conceptual in nature so its about how you think about these issues rather than address specific points like technology, HR, etc. That is not bad as you need to think clearly to make good decisions, but for people looking for a recipe at the functional level will not find it here.

This is not a good e-Book. Much of the book's value rests in its illustrations on how to use the different geometry's. Because of this I would recommend purchasing the book in hardcopy rather than electronically. I purchased a Kindle version and found myself recopying the diagrams into a notebook so I could think and annotate them better.

The writing style is rather academic and heavy requiring your concentration to work though and digest. This is another reason for not purchasing this as an eBook that one tends to read/skim more than study.

The book concentrates on Keidel's ideas and points without putting them into the broader context of what the reader may already know. I get the impression hat the book assumes that there is only one way to do strategy, which limits your ability to bring the reader's experience into play.

An inspiration in managment and organizational thinking

Robert W Keidel is a brilliant thinker who deserves far more visibility than he has in the global management arena. His latest book is an inspiration and a great, much expected (for me) follow up to `Seeing organizational patterns', a source of stimulation I return to often in my work as a consultant, author and speaker. I wish we could make Keidel's work compulsory to anybody with organizational/management responsibilities. For one tenth of Keidel's ideas others have created guru empires with little new ideas but a lot of noise. Thanks Robert.

I found this book reads fast. It's not a simple read, but it's organized well and has a number of useful concepts. Unlike some other books, I can see how the information correlates with my professional career. I was renting it, but went ahead and bought it because I might want to refer back to the information at a later date.
