Reads like poems, feels like story

This is a book of a poems that tells a story about the author's life. As poems do, it glimpses here and shares thoughts there and reveals feelings elsewhere. But these pieces come together to show you the life this man has lived and where he has gone and how he has navigated through a rough and tumble southern california life and what role his family and adventures have played.
The unique thing about this book is how it takes you to a place. The feeling after reading these poems is a bit of "I've just read a story" versus "I've just read a poem". I like this about it, because while you are reading you it you can enjoy the world play and layers, but afterward you can think of it like having taken a trip and met an interesting person.

Raw, Gritty, Unique.

His poems were so good and easy to relate to. It took me back to so many times in my life where i experienced similar events. Maybe not as graphic but definitely similar. through a discussion, I heard some people say that he wasn't credible. How much of this is real and how much is not? Does it really matter though? I mean it's poetry, the point to me is, did you feel it? I dont really understand the concept of doubting a poet or questioning the authenticity of a poem. Martinez's poems were raw, gritty, unique, and they made me feel. I was satisfied and full of excitement when I finished. Look forward to more.

Grainger also probes the nature of musical genius, discussing a broad range of composers including Igor Stravinsky, Thomas Beecham, Frederick Delius, Edvard Grieg, Charles Stanford, Cyril Scott, Fritz Kreisler, Donald Tovey, Ferruccio Busoni, and Balfour Gardiner. Among the works of his own that Grainger most featured are his The Warriors --Music for an Imaginary Ballet, Colonial Song, the Lincolnshire Posy series of band pieces, his greatest "hit" Country Gardens, and his many settings of English folk-music.

Written in Grainger's own self-created "Nordic English" as well as translated from Danish, the language of his most intimate confessions, Self-Portrait of Percy Grainger sheds light on some of the most revealing details of the composer's life. About the Author

Malcolm Gillies is a vice-president of The Australian National University and a leading figure in Australian higher education and research. As a musicologist, he has written extensively on twentieth-century music, including major studies of Béla Bartók and Percy Grainger. Since 1997 he has been the editor of the series Studies in Musical Genesis and Structure, published by Oxford University Press.

David Pear is a senior lecturer at Monash University (Australia) and a fellow of the Humanities Research Centre in Canberra. He holds a PhD from The University of Queensland, and other qualifications in theology, education, and music. Pear has been a co-editor of letter, reminiscence, and autobiographical volumes of Grainger's writings, and has worked extensively in the Grainger Museum (Melbourne).

Mark Carroll is a senior lecturer in Music at the Elder School of Music, University of Adelaide (Australia), from which he holds his doctoral degree. For several decades he has worked as a professional classical and popular musician. His recent publications include Music and Ideology in Cold War Europe (2003), and a co-edited volume of Grainger essays. Carroll is also a researcher for The Australian Ballet.

Readers will be mesmerized by Stratton’s engaging writing style. This spine-chilling, young adult thriller will keep readers guessing until the very last page.

I love ghost stories!

This is a great little book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a ghost story that has some creepiness, but is one of those that you feel good about when everything is finally revealed.

Cameron and his mom move around a lot. They are always running from Cameron's dad who seems to not be a nice guy. This final move brings them to the old farmhouse that seems like it needs to be demolished by the way Cameron describes it. Needless to say he's not happy at having to leave his friends behind this last time and has a hard time making friends at the new school.

One of the boys he talks to says the place is haunted, a man was killed there by his own guard dogs.

Cameron starts seeing things, first just movements here and there. But then, he sees a little boy and starts talking to him. In between thinking he is losing his mind, Cameron starts on a search for the people that used to live there. He gets some information from their landlord that lives on the farm next door. He gets more information in different places.

But when he starts acting strange his mom and her new boyfriend wonder if something is happening to him. Is he going crazy like his father?

Read this wonderful little book and find out what really happened on the farm and who the ghosts are and how everything comes to a bitter-sweet end.

I love the book and I love that creepy house on the cover. :)

Paranormal read

I was excited to grab this book at the library the other day as I have heard it was creepy and scary. After reading it, I feel that this novel will appeal to the younger YA crowd than to the older crowd based on its content. I enjoyed the story and I liked how the author told the story. As you move through the novel, the author releases the details slowly and adds them to the storyline, there are no big dumps of information and all the information is pertinent to the novel. As the main character starts to unravel or clarify the information on the mystery he was solving, the author does a fantastic job explaining how everything fits together. I always find it frustrating when I’m reading a novel and as the mystery is getting solved, the author is not clear how the pieces fit together. For a YA novel, Allan Stratton could not have done a better job on making this clearer for his readers. I didn’t find the book as thrilling or as riveting as I expected it to be but the paranormal aspect of the book was wonderful. I am used to the creeper aspect of paranormal activity than the mysterious side which I feel this novel undertook so I feel this toned the novel down in intensity for me. For Cameron sees Jacky, he calls to him and sometimes he answers and other times, he doesn’t but Jacky is a part of Cameron’s life now. Cameron’s dad, he’s not a part of Cameron’s life and that is a choice that Cameron’s mom made as she moves Cameron and herself around, for she fears that he is there….somewhere out there watching and he will be back. The farmhouse seems like a nice place to settle down for a while, it’s remote and yet it’s close to a city. The house has a history and Cameron; he’s bound and determined to find out what it is before he becomes a part of it.

Finally, a good one!

This book by J. M. Thijssen is a rare gem. You note this as you browse the index. Quantum scattering, variational methods for the Schrödinger equation, the Hartree-Fock method, density functional theory, classical and quantum molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods and transfer matrix methods. Even a solid chapter on lattice field theory! The book isn't child's play (like most books on computational physics), but a beautifully written text covering both physical and computational issues, superficially but concisely. A neat selection of references guides readers to comprehensive, modern literature. The right balance of tricks and theory puts the readers few steps away from developing their own code. I don't award the fifth star because software engineering and object orientation issues are ignored.

Good book for the price

This book was assigned in a class I took on the computer modeling of materials. The text itself was slightly above my understanding; but thats fine, I just was not prepared for it. The problem is that there are many exercises that require the reader to download software from the author's web site, and use it to perform calculations. Many times the software did not work as intended, and so the professor had to spend time correcting the code, or writing his own version. And of course there were the usual problems of installing the code properly, compiling it, and executing it. This idea would have worked much better if the necessary code was put onto a CD-ROM that came packaged with the book. For the software problems I dock one star out of five.

The introduction states that this text is intended for graduate students in physics, chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering, and who have taken classes in numerical analysis. I think a more appropriate wording is that this text is for someone versed in all of these listed fields. There is extensive use of thermodynamics, symmetry and crystal structure, linear algebra, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, etc... This book should not be used as an introductory guide to computational physics or related fields. The necessary prerequisite knowledge is quite extensive.

The intro should specify at least 2 college classes in computer programming as a prerequisite for this book. The programming assignments included at the end of each chapter are quite challenging, and should not be attempted by someone without previous experience in writing mathematical codes. This here lies another problem with the approach taken by this book. Most science and engineering majors will take 1-2 courses in programming as part of their university education, but these classes often emphasize business applications such as reading / writing to a text file, creating and using databases, formatting of screen output, linked lists, etc... These skills are not very useful in writing a code to do computations. For the latter, needed skills include parsing data, recognizing patterns, using built-in functions, importing and using algorithms from online libraries. utilizing large matrices and vectors, etc...

What the author should have done for each computational homework problem is to write out the solution (code) himself, add in the documentation, and then removed the code while leaving the documentation intact. The student can then use the documentation to craft his/her own solution.

For the difficulty of the computing problems, and of the text in general, I dock another star.

Therefore, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

The best computational physics book available

This is a very decent book on computational physics, focusing primarily on condensed matter. It's up there with Allen and Tildesley's "Computer Simulation of Liquids", though with a broader selection of subjects and more suited to physicists.

There are inevitable errors, some of which would take a bit of effort to fix were it not for the error web page the author maintains.

Many problems in condensed matter are tackled, always with a view toward implementing an actual numerical investigation (this may sound like a given, but several other texts seem to shy away from actually using a computer, exploiting some variant of 'computational' in the title as an excuse to write yet another redundant physics text that is only cursorily computational). Often, nice snippets of pseudocode are presented, along with suggestions for numerical control parameters to use and the corresponding numerical results obtained - so one can try things out and check the answer. Indeed, the book is best used if one sets about to write code to solve problems, both in the main text and in the exercises at the chapter ends. As is often the case, however, getting a piece of new code to behave correctly can be a bit of a pain, which becomes easier only with experience.

In a real sense, the text helps bring some physics to life, and one is rewarded, I think, with a clearer understanding, and some powerful tools at one's disposal.

Though it doesn't have any real competitor, there is room for a second edition: along with correcting errors, several subjects could do with a bit more discussion or even extensive treatment, and other things could profitably be included, e.g., a DFT implementation of Car-Parrinello quantum atomic dynamics.
