Just buy the movie instead

With all due respect to the previous review, I didn't care for this book at all. I bought this because I've read many of the other BFI Film Classics series, and enjoyed them all, but in my opinion this is one of the weakest of the books. It's disjointed, there's no real background about the movie and the actors, and when I got to the last page I threw it against the wall in disgust. Save your money, or better yet, use your money to buy the movie!

WHAT A BAG OF WIND - SAVE YOUR MONEY ! !

There is hardly any insight into the making of this movie, what little there is can be summed up in 2 pages. Author Frieda Grafe does nothing more than recite high minded psycho-babble, it is like reading an advance psychology textbook. My eyes continually glazed over. She uses page fillers with quotes from other sources not even relevant to this beautiful film. The book reeks of an author who has nothing to say, but is SO full of herself, she drones on anyway. It's Grafe's narcissistic snobbish opinions - it has virtually NOTHING to do with Ghost/Muir. I threw mine in the trash.
The lowest Amazon asking price of $25.99 is an outrageous rip-off! BUYER BEWARE.
60 pages with full page 3rd rate photos + blank pages + "lists" = ripoff!

Was looking for the book for which the movie was based on. Since it wasn't, I went ahead and bought the movie and really enjoy it.

A graduate from Alfred University with a BA in psychology and an MS in counselor education, Brady is the former head tennis professional at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Wild Dunes Tennis Center in the Isle of Palms, South Carolina.

Looking for the mind set of a professional player? This is your book!

I have followed Steve's methodology on tennis for decades. I thought I had learned all there was to learn from him, however once I read this book I realized I was just scratching the surface of his knowledge.

This book helped me through some very tough matches, every time I was in a crunch point I would think back to what I had read and applied it. Since reading this book I am finding my self less stressful and much more focused in the crucial moments of a match. It has really helped me maintain my focus without losing control of my emotions.

I suggest anyone read this if they are looking to gain the upper edge on their games during those difficult point and matches!!

Perhaps the most accurate prediction of Modern Times....

This year is the 50th anniversary of this novel. I remember that I was working as an engineer back when I first read it. This was appropriate since most of the main characters are engineers. I remember being struck at how close Vonnegut's predictions about society actually were. Now that I've reexamined them 20 years later, I am even more impressed.

The basic premise of the story is that American industry is run by a tiny group of wealthy and powerful managers and engineers, while the vast majority of the population are stripped of their well-paying industrial jobs and forced to live as poor, powerless menials.

This elite of managers and engineers live in closed, gated Orwellian communities, where they watch each other closely for the slightest hint of nonconformity or disloyalty to the system.

Vonnegut shows how most managers and engineers have always had a contempt for the average American worker and have been looking for a way to replace them even before WW2. He thought that this would primarily be by automation (as opposed to simply shipping the jobs out of the country.)

Vonnegut also assumed that agriculture would be totally mechanised by large corporations and the small farmer made extinct.

There is also the eerie prediction that the President would be a man of low intelligence who would get elected on the basis of a "three hour television show." It would make no difference because there would be no connection between who was elected and who actually ran the country. Remenber, this was in 1952....

Oh yes, he also predicted that no one would be able to get any job worth having without a graduate degree.

I know that some people will say that this novel is dated based simply on the repeated mention of vacuum tubes (transistors were not in commercial use in 1952.) However, if you substiute "integrated circuit" or "computer chip" for every place he uses vacuum tube the obsolescence vanishes. Simularly, a modern reader may laugh at the idea of a computer large enough to fill Carlesbad caverns. Believe me, even today the Cray supercomputers and their support equipment take up quite abit of space.

My only real criticism with Vonnegut's projections is that he thought that engineers would have alot more power and influence than they actually have. From my own experience MBA's, CPA's, and lawyers have much more power.

Vonnegut's first a good indication for later

A lot of people, even Vonnegut fans, probably haven't heard of this book, for whatever reasons. Vonnegut really doesn't discuss it that much, mostly because he dislikes the label of science-fiction, which this book, along with The Sirens of Titan and even Slaughterhouse-Five, clearly is.

Still, this book is a must for Vonnegut fans or even those interested in old science-fiction in the style of Orwell or Huxley. Those looking for Vonnegut's classic deadpan black humorist style won't find it here. The beginnings of it are here, however and Vonnegut's tale of Paul Proteus' rebellion against the oppressive government is still as entertaining and fascinating as it was years ago. Read with the aforementioned 1984 and Brave New World, this book provides a slight contrast by using a different tone and more humor, but the message is still the same, that technology will ruin us all and bring about our ultimate downfall.

Fortunately this book has been reissued so that fans can see how Vonnegut started out, and fortunately, unlike most writers' first novels, Vonnegut's initial effort is just as readable as his later works

Brilliant

I am only 25 and already burnt out and disgusted with the corporate world. This book really hit home with me. Vonnegut mocks and satarizes corporate life, which, after reading this book, obviously hasn't become any less discouraging or frusterating as it was 47 years ago. Player Piano is a must read for anyone who is appauled by the reality that, with few exceptions, one must completely sell out and conform in order to advance in a large corporation. Anyone who is currently mired in corporate America will recognize at least one or two of the characters and/or situations in this book as ones they themselves have had to (or continue to) deal with regularly, and therefore will feel a strong bond with Paul Proteus by book's end.

A pocket-sized laugh!

Bought this as a stocking stuffer for my son-in-law, a newly minted Ph.D., who just moved himself and my daughter across country to pursue post-doc research. It is a cleverly written little book and who knew that neuroscience could offer such fertile field for Haiku! We shared a long-distance laugh over just a few succinct syllables.

Tons of insightful information, but very poorly edited.

I read through this book cover to cover to learn more about the travel and home based travel agency industry. The information contained within was extremely useful, and provided a terrific overview of the steps necessary to start you own business. Perhaps it made it seem a little too easy to become successful as a home based travel agent, but the ingredients were all there. This included setting up your business, creating a marketing plan, hooking up to the travel provider network, and training involved.
However, I am only giving this book 3 stars because the editing job for this book seemed non-existent. Lack of commas throughout, many typos, blank lines in the middle of paragraphs, grammatical errors, and other basic editing tasks were obviously not done. I can't imagine why this level of polish was left out. If you can ignore this then the book is well worth it for the knowledge gained.
I also wanted to note that the authors promote their own affiliated web sites a little too often throughout the text which wasn't necessary. A more unbiased set of Web links would have been more useful.

This is the book

While there are typos in the book, How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency is an excellent book that helped me make the transition from store front to home based. After 7 years as a retail travel agent, I was forced to go home-based. I looked at both this book and the other one (Home Based Travel Agent) and found this one to represent the information necessary to make the transition. Tom and Joanie Ogg are well known and respected in the travel business and their expertise goes without rival.
Do yourself a favor, this is the book to buy.

Great Book!

I was a "travel agent" for GTI and just didn't get the support I needed and found the benefits non-existent. But I found out that I wanted to become a real travel agent. I bought both books from Amazon.com and found How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency the best book for anyone wanting to start a serious career selling travel. The other book is good if you want to join GTI or organizations like that. I didn't find many errors in it at all.

There's a little bit of everything for everybody; a good mix of niche transformations only some enjoy, and stuff everybody and their mother likes. This is both a good and a bad thing - while it has variety, many of the stories (and as a result, changes) are fast-paced and brief; again, a blessing and a curse. The only thing it has in abundance is weight gain. If you're into a lot of different things, it's really worth picking up.
